Building that organisation requires people who are curious, careful and willing to question assumptions. We are interested in people who care about getting things right, can distinguish evidence from assertion, and believe that journalism should help people understand the world rather than simply compete for their attention.

Why The Academica

The Academica was created around the idea that technology can make serious journalism broader, faster and more accessible while strong editorial standards protect its credibility.

Our newsroom combines human editorial judgement with technology and artificial intelligence to identify, research, prepare and organise news at scale. But efficiency is not our only objective. Accuracy, independence and intellectual seriousness remain fundamental to what we are building.

We also want to create a publication where genuine expertise has a larger role in public discussion. That means looking beyond the conventional cycle of political commentary and seeking knowledge from academics, researchers and people who understand the subjects they discuss.

Joining The Academica means joining this effort while the organisation is still being built. For the right people, that also means an opportunity to take meaningful responsibility and help shape how a new newsroom develops.

Who we look for

We are interested in people from different professional and academic backgrounds. Depending on our requirements as the organisation grows, opportunities may arise across areas including:

Editorial and journalism

Editors, reporters, editorial verification analysts, researchers, copy editors and other professionals involved in producing and reviewing journalism.

Research and verification

People with strong research skills who can examine sources, verify factual claims, assess evidence and identify inconsistencies or unsupported information.

Technology and product

Engineers, designers, data professionals, AI specialists and product professionals interested in building technology for journalism, publishing and newsroom operations.

Business and operations

People working across advertising, partnerships, subscriptions, finance, administration, audience development and the operational functions required to build a sustainable independent publication.

The precise qualifications required will depend on the work involved. We care about credentials where they are relevant, but credentials alone do not determine whether someone will be good at the work.

Early-career opportunities

You do not necessarily need years of newsroom experience to have something valuable to contribute.

For suitable roles, The Academica welcomes interest from recent graduates and people at the beginning of their careers. We are particularly interested in people who demonstrate strong reading and research abilities, attention to detail, sound judgement, intellectual curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Early-career employees should expect real responsibility. The use of technology within our newsroom changes some traditional editorial tasks, but it makes careful human judgement, verification and accountability more—not less—important.

Experienced professionals

Some responsibilities require experience that cannot be replaced by technology or enthusiasm alone.

We are interested in experienced journalists, editors, media professionals, technologists and specialists who can bring judgement, institutional knowledge and professional expertise to The Academica.

As the organisation grows, experienced professionals will also play an important role in developing standards, mentoring younger colleagues and helping build the systems and culture of the newsroom.

Internships

The Academica may offer internships for students and recent graduates who want practical experience in journalism, research, technology or other areas of the organisation.

Students and recent graduates interested in future internship opportunities may send their CV and a short introduction to careers@theacademica.com, mentioning “Internship” and their area of interest in the subject line. We may contact suitable candidates when internship opportunities become available.

Academics and subject-matter experts

Academics and specialists do not need to become employees of The Academica to work with us.

Researchers, scholars and subject-matter experts who would like to contribute their expertise, provide commentary in their field or make themselves available as potential sources for our journalists can contact us separately.

Please see our Contact Us page for information about joining our network of academic and subject-matter experts.

Interested in working with us?

The Academica is still growing, and our hiring needs will evolve as the organisation develops. We may not always have a specific position advertised, but we are interested in hearing from people who believe they could contribute to what we are building.

If you would like to work with The Academica, you are welcome to send us your CV or résumé at any time.

Email: careers@theacademica.com

Please include:

  • Your full name and contact details.
  • Your current CV or résumé.
  • The area in which you would be interested in working with us, such as editorial, research and verification, technology, product, business or operations.
  • A short introduction telling us about yourself and why you are interested in The Academica.
  • Links or attachments containing relevant work samples, portfolios or published work, where applicable.
  • Your current location and, where relevant, your willingness to relocate or work from the location associated with a future role.

We will retain suitable applications for consideration as our team grows. If your background appears relevant to a current or future requirement, we may contact you to discuss an opportunity.

Submitting a CV does not constitute an application for a specific position, guarantee an interview or create any commitment of employment from The Academica.

How we hire

When a suitable requirement arises, we may contact candidates whose backgrounds appear relevant and invite them to participate in our recruitment process.

Depending on the nature of the role, this may include conversations with our team, interviews, and written or practical assessments. Editorial candidates, for example, may be asked to demonstrate research, verification, editing, news judgement or written communication skills rather than being assessed solely on academic qualifications or previous job titles.

We want recruitment decisions to reflect a candidate's ability to perform the work and contribute to the organisation.

Fair opportunity

The Academica is committed to fair consideration in recruitment. Employment decisions should be based on the requirements of the role, relevant skills, demonstrated ability, experience where required and the candidate's capacity to contribute to the organisation.

We want people with different experiences and perspectives to be able to compete for opportunities on their merits.

Recruitment safety

The Academica does not charge application, recruitment, interview or placement fees to candidates.

We will never ask an applicant to make a payment in order to be considered for employment. Candidates should be cautious of individuals or organisations claiming to represent The Academica while requesting money, financial credentials or other inappropriate information as part of a recruitment process.

Official recruitment communication should come through channels associated with theacademica.com.
